Janja Garnbret onsights two 8c routes in a single day in Osp cave
Slovenian climbing superstar Janja Garnbret continues to raise the bar in outdoor climbing. During a recent visit to the legendary cave of Osp, Janja onsighted Osapska pošast L2 (8c) and Working class hero (8b+) — all in a single session. Following recent breakage of holds on Working class hero, some climbers have proposed an upgrade to 8c, making Janja’s achievement even more impressive.
With these two ascents, Janja—who is now 26 years old—has onsighted a total of five routes graded 8c, firmly cementing her status as one of the most versatile climbers in the world.
Kneepads or not? Grade debate continues
As is often the case in climbing, some grade discussions have emerged. Adam Ondra, who also onsighted Osapska pošast L2, noted that with kneepads, the route felt closer to 8b+. He commented: “Probably not 8c if you have kneepads and know how to use them. Without kneepads it would have been a skin massacre, but all the kneebars are totally usable even without them.”
Similarly, Siniša Škalec weighed in on Working class hero, saying: “I broke two holds in the upper part and climbed it after that. With new beta in the lower crux and with kneepads, it’s not harder than 8b.”
However, it’s worth noting that Janja climbed both routes without kneepads, sticking to pure footwork and technical mastery. This bolsters the case for maintaining the original 8c grades for both lines when climbed in the same style.
Janja’s outdoor focus in 2025
Following nearly a decade of dominance on the IFSC competition circuit—including Olympic gold in Tokyo—Janja has announced she will participate in only three competitions in 2025. Her main focus is now on outdoor climbing, where she continues to push boundaries.
Her next goal? The iconic Bibliographie (9b+) in Céüse, France. Should she succeed, she would become only the second woman ever to climb a route of that grade.
Let’s wish Janja Garnbret the best of luck as she continues to inspire the climbing world—both on the wall and on rock.
