Andrea Locatelli sends Il sicario sanguinario (8c) at age 13

In an astounding display of talent and determination, 13-year-old Italian prodigy Andrea Locatelli successfully sent Il sicario sanguinario (8c) in Baratro on just his third attempt. The route, a 30-meter-long challenge situated in the heart of the Baratro cave, is known for its demanding endurance climbing, culminating in a difficult crux featuring sharp crimps near the top. Locatelli’s achievement is nothing short of remarkable, especially given the scorching summer heat that has gripped the region.

This season has seen a remarkable female collaboration in Baratro, where top climbers like Mina Markovič and Ivana Staraj have teamed up, forming what can only be described as a “dream team.” Croatian climber Ivana Staraj recently ticked off the crimpy Placcoman (8a), while Slovenian climbing star Mina Markovič is steadily making her comeback. Just days ago, Markovič successfully completed Baratroneta (8a+), a testament to her resilience and skill.

Considering the intense heat wave that has swept through Istria in recent days, these accomplishments are even more impressive. While many climbers have sought refuge in the mountains to escape the oppressive temperatures, Locatelli, Staraj, and Markovič have demonstrated extraordinary perseverance, tackling some of Baratro’s hardest routes with remarkable success.
