“Psico” or “crazy” in spanish, and bloc, the discipline of rock climbing which takes place on a wall of three or four meters in height, with a mat on the ground to break one’s fall. Combining both “Psico” and “bloc” together, we get a form of “crazy” bloc, which consists of climbing an outdoor wall solo style, without a rope or harness, above a surface of natural water that acts as a safety net (deep water solo).
The competition
Psicobloc Open Series takes the sport of Psicobloc, and adds a competition. The wall is 16m high above the water. The athletes have to not only get to the top without falling, but get there before their opponent.
The dual format is an invitation to take risks: doing it quickly is not enough, you have to do it faster. This results in strategic decisions of the “make it or break it” type, and, consequently, inevitable falls into the water. The 2023 edition champion Joe Goodacre succeeded in the ascent in 11.5 seconds.
