Janja Garnbret Onsights Popolni mrk (8c) in Mišja peč

Janja Garnbret took advantage of good conditions to onsight the hard and crimpy Popolni mrk (Total eclipse), an 8c route in the central part of Mišja peč.

The route is about 35 meters long, with the first 15 meters being pumpy, followed by a long and extremely difficult boulder section on small crimps and bad footholds in a gently overhanging wall. After this, a decent rest on small tufas leads to an exciting, steep boulder problem that finishes at the top of the wall.

This marks Janja’s third 8c onsight, after Fish eye (8c) and American hustle (8c), both in Oliana, Spain. Popolni mrk is considered her hardest 8c onsight to date. The route itself is among the hardest and rarely repeated 8c climbs in Mišja peč. Janja also achieved both the first onsight and the first female ascent of the route.

More Hard Sends This February

Janja’s incredible onsight of Popolni mrk (8c) wasn’t the only impressive ascent this month—February has seen plenty of strong performances across various crags:

  • Janez Miklavčič finally sent his long-term project, the crimpy Vizija (8c), after returning from a trip to Terradets, where he climbed in the famous Les Bruixes sector.
  • Ahac Istenič clipped the chains of his first 8b, the chipped classic Mrtvaški ples (8b), in extremely foggy and humid conditions.
  • Martin Bergant onsighted the long and beautiful Uživancija (8a) in the central part of Mišja peč.
  • Luca Bacer ticked off the endurance testpiece J.S.F.K. Extension (8b), featuring its famous dyno move near the top.
  • Michal Lodzinski from Poland celebrated success with an ascent of the incredible Sreča vrtnice (8b).

Croatian Istria Sends

In Croatian Istria, several strong ascents also took place:

  • Lukasz Dudek (Poland) visited the sunny Kompanj, where he onsighted Realitätsverlust (8a) and made a quick ascent of All in, I’m out (8c+), a Klemen Bečan masterpiece.
  • Matteo Gambaro (Italy) also visited Kompanj, flashing the classic Realitätsverlust (8a) and redpointing 5 stars classics like Reinini (8a) and Hard sun (8b+).
