Fresh climbing news from Istria
The Istrian climbing scene is buzzing with fresh developments! New routes are being bolted, classics rebolted, and exciting projects are on the horizon. If you’re planning your next trip, here’s the freshest climbing news straight from the crags.
Fresh Routes in Črni kal
Legendary Slovenian alpinist Silvo Karo has been busy in his home crag, Črni kal, gifting us with several fresh lines:
Ostržek – 16 m, around 5c. A nice addition in sector Risanke, tucked between Ducky Duff and Bugs Bunny.
9. nebesa – a beautiful 35 m route, 6a+, located on the far left side of sector B, just left of Konec raja. The line shares its finish with Konec raja for the last 8 m, but starts independently, slightly around the corner.
3 mušketirji – 18 m, 7b, in the sector above the road (about 10 m left of Spoved). First ascent by Silvo’s longtime friend and Trieste legend, Berto Giassi.
Stara šola – 16 m, 6a, just right of 3 mušketirji.
Grades will settle with more ascents. Huge thanks goes to Silvo for bolting, donating equipment, and putting in all the fresh energy that keeps Črni kal alive.
Fresh Effort in Befana – Rebolting in Progress
The Befana sector in Buzetski kanjon is currently under a major rebolting operation. Throughout September and October, climbers are kindly asked to visit other crags in Istria while the work is in progress.
The fresh rebolting project is led by SPK Hiperaktiv, with support from the Istrian Region, the Croatian Federation of Sport Climbing, and the Sports Climbing Association of the Istrian Region. The goal: safe, modern, and durable routes for next season.
We hope this is just the beginning of many fresh projects, and that the City of Buzet will join future maintenance efforts for its world-class climbing areas.
Fresh bolts in Baratro
Across the border in Trieste, the summer crag Baratro has also been updated. Thanks to the Proghetto Verticale Trieste ASD crew, many classics have fresh bolts and are ready for action.
Skedenj – Officially fresh again
Big news for Istria: Skedenj officially reopened this summer! With the combined effort of Projekt OSP and Proghetto verticale Trieste ASD, almost all the routes have been rebolted. Only a few lines on the far left and right are still missing some initial bolts.
A fresh sector on the Karst edge
One impressive new sector is currently being equipped on the Karst edge. For now, the exact location stays secret until cleaning and bolting are finished. Expect fresh information by winter season.
Baratro dei Cavalli – A fresh summer spot
Another new summer crag above Trieste, Baratro dei Cavalli, has been opened recently. It’s shady and perfect for hot days—more fresh news about it will follow soon.
Parking at Mišja peč
A quick practical update: parking at Mišja peč it is safe, and police checks are more frequent. Take your valuables out, park safely and keep your climbing trip stress-free.
With so many fresh routes, fresh bolts, and fresh projects, the Istrian climbing season promises to be one of the most exciting yet!
