Gabriele Gorobey climbs Xaxid hostel (9a) at Mišja peč
On January 16, 2025, Italian climber Gabriele “Sbisi” Gorobey successfully completed his third 9a route, Xaxid hostel, at Mišja peč in Slovenia.
Another 9a achievement for Gorobey
Gorobey, a 38-year-old climber from Trieste, adds Xaxid hostel to his list of significant ascents. His previous successes include Sanjski par extension (9a) and Halupca 1979 (9a), both of which he sent within two weeks in 2019. Xaxid Hostel is one of the longest routes at Mišja peč, scaling the crag’s central wall. Originally first ascended in 2009 by Czech climber Tomáš Mrázek and initially graded at 9a+, the climb has since settled at a confirmed 9a difficulty.
Overcoming the challenge
The route features an intense crux sequence that demands exceptional finger strength and ideal conditions. Gorobey had attempted the climb multiple times, successfully passing the crux on three occasions but falling just before the final easy section due to wet holds. However, his persistence paid off. On a Thursday evening, with the famous bora wind sweeping through the crag and the rock still warm from the setting sun, Gorobey executed a flawless redpoint ascent.
A dedicated climber and route developer
Beyond his achievements in sport climbing, Gorobey has an impressive resume. When he is not on duty at the Gorizia fire station, he dedicates his time to bolting new climbing routes around Trieste and across Istria. Additionally, he has established challenging multi-pitch routes worldwide, often ground-up, further cementing his reputation as a committed and passionate climber.
Other ascents in Istria
Ivana Staraj achieved an impressive feat by sending three 8a routes within a week: classic Samsara (8a) and bouldery Iglu (8a) at Mišja peč, along with Giber (8a) in scenic Medveja.
Meanwhile, 13-year-old Ajda Skukan Mlačnik reached a new milestone by completing her first 8b, the chipped Mrtvaški ples (8b). She also sent Giljotina (8a) on her second attempt, both at Mišja peč. A week prior, she had successfully clipped the chains of Iglu (8a) as well.
Weather forecast for Istria
The weather forecast for Istria in the coming days looks very promising, with a sunny weekend and favorable conditions continuing throughout the week. Temperatures will consistently remain above 10 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for climbing in the sun.
