Redpoints from Baratro & FA’s in Befana

The summer heat in Istria has been relentless this year, with temperature records continuing to fall. As a result, climbing is only enjoyable in the region’s shadier crags, such as Baratro, Skedenj, Befana in Buzetski kanjon, Rovinj (in the morning), Čepić, Nugla, and a few other sheltered spots.

Despite the challenging conditions, strong ascents continue to be reported.

In Baratro, Slovenian former World Cup competitor Lana Skušek redpointed Il sicario di sanguinario (8c), the technical endurance testpiece in the middle of the cave. Local Italian climber Lorenzo Zavatta completed the powerful Hercules (8b+), while another Slovenian climber, Katja Mesarič, climbed the classic Placcoman (8a).

Meanwhile, in Croatia, the summer sector Befana in Buzetski kanjon has seen a wave of development. Local climbers have cleaned and re-equipped old projects, resulting in several quality first ascents.

On the far right side of the sector, Gianfranco Dušič established Giant Š (7c). He also climbed a direct finish to Buzečanke (7a), creating the new route Ročanka (7b+).

Another impressive first ascent came from Goran Matika – Gogo, who climbed Prez besid (8b), the left exit of Lap dance (8b). During recent attempts on Lap dance (8b), a crucial hold broke, but after the route was climbed again, the original grade remained unchanged.

Gogo also completed Magistrala (8a), a quality new line that starts to the right of Lap dance (8b) before joining Prez besid (8b). It is already being described as one of the best 8a routes in the crag.

A huge thank you goes to everyone involved in cleaning, rebolting, and developing these new lines. Thanks to their hard work, Befana continues to grow into one of the best summer climbing destinations in Istria.

Weather outlook: The forecast suggests that the current heatwave will continue over the next few days, with daytime temperatures around 33–35°C and plenty of sunshine. The shady crags of Baratro, Befana, Skedenj and other summer sectors will remain the best climbing options. A noticeable cooldown is expected early next week, when temperatures should drop to around 28°C, accompanied by a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, potentially opening up more climbing possibilities across Istria.
