Attila (8c) in Baratro Climbed by Luca Bacer

Local climber from Trieste, Luca Bacer, has successfully sent another 8c route, this time conquering the challenging Attila in the secret crag of Baratro above Trieste Bay.

Attila, bolted and crafted by Dino Šturman over two decades ago, presents a formidable challenge. The route starts with demanding moves on sika edges, followed by a decent rest, and concludes with a boulder section on sloping pinches in a significant overhang stretching about 20 meters. Swiss World Cup competitor and base jumper Simon Wandeler made the first ascent.

The route’s namesake, Attila the Hun, was the ruler of the Huns from 434 until his death in 453. He led the Hunnic Empire, a tribal confederation of Huns, Ostrogoths, and Alans, among others, in Central and Eastern Europe. During his reign, Attila was one of the most feared adversaries of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires – a true historical badass!

As temperatures soar across Istria, finding good climbing conditions becomes challenging. However, Baratro remains one of the coolest spots in the area, providing a respite from the heat. Recently, 13-year-old Andrea Locatelli redpointed La Supercanna (8b+) and onsighted Violenza carnale (8a) at this crag. Additionally, Sebastian Castenetto ticked off the soft Masochismo (8b).

In the big cave of Osp, despite the heat, Pole Jedrzej Krzeminski successfully clipped the chains of the 55-meter-long endurance test piece, Active discharge (8b+), on his second attempt.

With another heat wave expected to hit the Istrian Peninsula in the coming days, it might be wise to consider deep water soloing or escaping to the mountains. Hopefully, summer will soon give way to ‘Sendtember’, bringing cooler temperatures and many hard redpoints.
