As we wrap up 2024, the Istrian climbing scene has once again proven itself a hotspot for some of the most impressive and best ascents and events in the climbing world. From groundbreaking sends by top climbers to community-driven initiatives, here’s a look at the best highlights of the year.

Top female climbers of 2024

Laura Rogora made an extraordinary mark in Mišja peč, sending a series of hard routes, including:

  • Sanjski par extension (9a) – First female ascent (FFA)
  • Martin Krpan (9a) – FFA
  • Xaxid hostel (9a) – FFA
  • Histerija (8c+)
  • Človek ne jezi se (8c+) – Second go, FFA
  • Sanjski par (8c+) – FFA
  • Talk is cheap (8c)
  • Strelovod (8c) – first go after succeeding in Martin Krpan (9a)

Lucija Tarkuš also showcased her best talent with her send of the crimpy Človek ne jezi se (8c) in Mišja peč, further cementing her reputation as one of the best in sport climbing.

Lana Skušek achieved her first 8c grade with Strelovod (8c) and followed it up with Talk is cheap (8c), both in Mišja peč. It was one of the best years for Lana’s climbing journey.

Top male climbers of 2024

Stefano Carnati dominated the hardest grades with:

Matjaž Zorko and Jakob Bizjak both sent the challenging Xaxid hostel (9a) in Mišja peč.

Local climber from Trieste, Luca Bacer, achieved his first 9a with Sanjski par extension (9a) in Mišja peč, a milestone in his climbing career. The same route, considered one of the best in the area, was also done by Italian Davide Picco.

Young talents also made their best mark:

  • Eliaš Kysela (18, Slovakia) sent Martin Krpan (9a) in Mišja peč.
  • Pepa Šindel (17, Czech Republic) kicked off the year with Martin Krpan (9a) on January 1st in Mišja peč.

Events and Community Highlights

  • World Cup in Koper: The Istrian coast hosted a thrilling and best-in-class round of the IFSC World Cup, drawing climbers and fans from around the globe.
  • Psicobloc in Umag: This exciting deep-water soloing event brought adventure and the best adrenaline to the shores of Umag.
  • Festival of Alpinism in Osp: A celebration of climbing culture and history in the heart of Istria.

Rebolting efforts the local climbing community took major steps in maintaining and improving routes:

  • Kompanj: 63 routes were rebolted, ensuring the best safety and longevity.
  • Skedenj: Nearly the entire crag was rebolted, with climbing officially authorized in the area.

First ascents this year by local legend Goran Matika – Gogo:

Besides Goran Matika’s first ascent, we also have to remember the FA of Captain Morgan (8b), a direct start to Malishan (7c+) in sector Krugi in Limski kanal by Matjaž Zorko. These routes now rank among the best new additions to the region.
